Yeah, it's possible, sorta.

You can register the machine to RHN or a satellite as a Server, even though it
is a desktop, but you will have to install server rpms separately if you need
them.

Edit the file /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date

Find the line: versionOverride=

Change it to: versionOverride=5Server

When you re-register, up2date will not try to automatically determine the type
of machine and instead will process it as a 5 Server.

After it is registered, you should have access to the Server channels and you
can do what you need to.

YMMV,

Dave

Subject: [rhelv5-list] Upgrade/Migration from RHEL 5Client to RHEL 5Server
possible?

Hi rhelv5-list@

A while back, I had to renew some RHEL subscriptions. I had a few that
where using Desktop + Workstation. I paid to upgrade those Desktop
subscriptions to Enterprise (Basic Server).

So, I have these two machines that are running RHEL 5 Desktop +
Workstation. I want to get them to use the now active RHEL Enterprise
Basic Server subscriptions.

Red Hat support is telling me that this impossible. I have to backup,
reload and restore. Which is a big pain in the butt (I think).

So my question is; shouldn't I be able to un-register my Desktop
machines, remove the 5Client rpms and then install the 5Server rpms,
edit some files and re-register?

Thanks for any pointers...

-Allen
