occurs to me I should have been more precise.

It used to be that because of flash (now there is a beta plugin, its meh)
and java plugins that many 64bit linux users still used 32bit firefox,
although I'm not sure if thats the actual reason its installed by default.

The multilib support inherent in the install process installs both i?86 and
x86_64 packages to provide 32bit support in your 64bit environment.  If you
have need of any software that doesn't work on a 64bit platform without
32bit libraries (primary culprit here is proprietary products in my
experience), then you can remove the 32bit packages, which includes
firefox.

Removing firefox shouldn't affect most of those applications, if any.
There will be some additional packages you will have to remove as well
(dependancy tree related).
