I agree with that practice. Which reminds me to rant about the fact that multipath.conf in Red Hat's device-mapper-multipath turns the "friendly" names on instead of leaving it to the default value (off). The cocktail of /dev/sdX, dm-XX, PVs/VGs/LVs etc already results in a rather steep learning curve: Figuring out which physical device you are actually hitting at a particular file system path can be hard, and the plethora of aliases/links in /dev and /sys is rather overwhelming.
