So I tried this:

mdadm -A /dev/md3 --homehost=<vmhostname> --update=homehost --auto=yes
/dev/sdd1 /dev/sdp1

And it didn't complain and assembled my array on md3.  After
disassembling the array and rebooting the dom0, once again it
auto-assembled the dang things.
