If you reply to a message yout get "in-reply-to" and "references" headers in your new message, even if you change the subject. The message you now send appears in the same thread (or conversation for gmail).
A lot of people -- me included sometimes -- just delete without reading messages that hijack threads. It depends on what client you are using, but often you can right-click on an address and choose "send message to this address" or something like that. Or cut and paste address. Or type it in. But please don't hijack threads. (Sorry to everyone who knows this already.) jch
