Hello Neil, I know about the problem with editing that file but, until the next update for python, yum will work.
About the problem with the abuse of service, solution that worked for me was deleting the server from rhn and register it again. I think the error was caused by to many attempts to connect to rhn when the yum didn't worked or the connection wasn't closed successfully after efery error.
