Tim, I also tried ZFS on linux and benchmarked it against XFS and EXT2/3/4. In my tests I was using 2X1TB RAID1 sata drives on 12GB RAM and i7 Intel Quad CPU. In my tests, the performance was little less than average, the dedup was also not something I could rave about. My setup was RAID1(mirror) with no SSD for metadata.
I know folks who run OpenIndiana and ZFS is native mode, they seem to be happy with perfomance, but the port for linux - still has long way to go to be comparative to SunOS.
