Interesting Items 11/09 –

Howdy all, a few Interesting Items for your information. Enjoy –

In this issue:

1.  ObamaCare
2.  Fort Hood
3.  Solution
4.  Muslims
5.  Seward
6.  Ares
7.  McClatchy

1.  ObamaCare.  Pelosi’s House majority passed the 1,900+ page version of
ObamaCare Saturday night.  The vote was 220-215 with newly elected NY-23
democrat Owens voting for it.  Owens had been on Capitol Hill less than 12
hours before casting his vote, and also campaigned against the legislation.
That didn’t take long.  But here are reasons that people are democrats, aren’t
there?  Pelosi also picked up a single Republican vote, Rep. Cao from LA, who
represents William “Cold Cash” Jefferson’s old district with a significant
democrat and black majority.  One of the games Pelosi played with the
legislation was passage of an amendment to strip out all pubic funding for
abortion.  Expect that amendment to get stripped in either the Senate or in
conference (likely both places).  This picked up a significant number of
so-called pro-life democrats.  Obama made a trip to Capitol Hill Saturday to
lobby members for passage of the
legislation.  Make no mistake; this is one of the worst assaults on individual
liberty and our future ever contemplated by congress.  This, along with cap and
trade will allow someone to control every single aspect of our lives.  Should
this pass, I would consider resurrecting the quaint American custom of tar and
feathers for the perpetrators.  Don’t ever give up.  Whatever happens, don’t
give up.

2.  Fort Hood.  A Medical Corps Major shot up an out-processing station at Fort
Hood, Texas late last week, killing 13 and wounding nearly 30.  This was the
first significant terrorist attack on US soil during Obama’s term in office.
The Major, named Maliki Nidal Hasan, was son of Palestinian immigrants.  He was
from Virginia and reportedly attended the same Falls Church Mosque as two of
the 9-11 hijackers attended.  Over the years, he became increasingly
radicalized, and political correctness in the Army would not allow anyone to
forcibly remove him from public service.  Sunday, the Army Chief of Staff,
General Casey, was on CNN warning against any backlash against Muslims in the
Army and vigorously defending the ongoing political correctness in the armed
forces today.  Hasan reportedly was yelling Allah Akbar as he started mowing
down the innocent.  Over the weekend, reports surfaced that indicated he was
under surveillance by the FBI for a
vigorous radical Muslim presence on the web, making numerous blog entries in
support of the Jihadi cause, and trying to get in touch with Al Qaida via the
net.  Apparently neither the FBI nor the Army Medical Corps was sufficiently
interested in connecting these dots to take appropriate action.  He had
reportedly been counseled at least once for proselytizing Islam to other active
duty troops while on duty.  There is a YouTube video of him in a Killeen
convenience store in full Muslim regalia.  The obvious question with all this
activity is why he was still on active duty and why had he not been mustered
out of the service or prosecuted and jailed for violating his oath of office?
The answer is political correctness.  Some of the writers on various Milblogs
note that the quickest way to stop your career as a military officer today is
to complain about inappropriate behavior by a fellow military member who is a
Muslim.  There are potentially tens
of thousands of these sleepers infesting the military at all levels today.
Hasan was shot by a female rent-a-cop, who also took three bullets herself.
Both survived the engagement.  Hasan should stand trial under the UCMJ in a
military Courts Martial for killing 13 and wounding the other 30 – 43 combined
counts of murder and attempted murder.  He also should stand trial for treason,
as he intentionally opened fire on his combat unit as it processed out for
deployment overseas.  Once convicted, he should follow Timothy McVeigh into
Hell via lethal injection.  And like McVeigh, he will not be missed.  Perhaps
they can include a bit of pig fat in the injection and bury the body with a bag
or two of pork rinds just to demonstrate our sense of humor.

3.  Solution.  If the Army is so under the poisonous spell of political
correctness that it will not defend itself from wannabee Jihadis who are
infesting it, at least allow the military members and their families to defend
themselves on post.  Today, the vast majority of all stateside military
installations prohibit carry of firearms by all civilians, dependents, and
off-duty military.  The most common exceptions are the military police, which
are always armed.  Weapons are normally tightly controlled for the other active
duty members.  Essentially, military installations are free fire zones for
Jihadis, not unlike public schools or colleges.  DoD could order sidearms to be
issued to ALL active duty military members and require those weapons to be
fully loaded and carried at all times.  Sidearm training wouldn’t hurt a lot
either, making the entire force a bit more lethal.  If the Jihadi vermin want
to shoot up military bases, and political
correctness does not allow anyone to remove them from military service for
cause, the least we can do is to make their choices as difficult as humanly
possible, for after all the Jihadi have demonstrated time after time that they
are the ultimate in murderous cowards, as they prey on the innocent, the
unarmed, and the unaware.  This is not going to be the last time this happens.
If it is to be open warfare on our soil, let us all be prepared to join that
battle and prevail in that war.

4.  Muslims.  Major Hasan and the media / military / administration response to
his actions will once again force us as a people to confront the fact that
there is a subset of people living in our borders among us, who would just as
soon see all of us either Muslim or dead.  So far, we have been polite and
deferential.  But actions have consequences, and the action of allowing
immigration from Palestine of people who have been raised for generations
hating Israel and the United States, inevitably lead to people like Hasan
running around planning and executing mayhem.  The action of allowing
Saudi-funded Wahhabi Mosques to operate with impunity, without monitoring,
creating and radicalizing the young helps to create more wannabee Jihadis like
Hasan.  The Laws of Physics do apply here, as elevating radicalized Muslims
here in the US to the status of perpetually aggrieved, ultimate victims is not
going to work for long.  Eventually there will be a
backlash.  Eventually there will be a reaction in the other direction.  And it
will be fast and thorough.  I do not think that the Jihadis and their
apologists will like it a lot.  They either need to clean up their own house or
someone else will do it for them.  This is not my preferred solution; but it is
one I fear that is building.  Every event like we was at Fort Hood gets us just
a little bit closer to that time.  In this regard, some writing on The Belmont
Club have suggested that we simply stop treating Islam as a religion and start
treating it as an ideology.  The rationale here is that religion is simply one
facet of Islam, as it carries with it a form of government (Caliphate), a set
of laws and justice (Sharia), and a vigorous military component (Jihad).

5.  Seward.  The southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad is at a coal shipment
terminal in Seward.  Coal is dumped into a conveyor and loaded into ships for
transport to the Pacific Rim.  We ship a lot of coal out of Alaska.  This
operation has been working happily and environmentally friendly since 1983 –
over 25 years.  Suddenly, it is no longer clean enough for local greens.  The
Sierra Club, Trustees for Alaska, Alaska Center for the Environment, and Alaska
Community Action on Toxics filed 60-day notice to sue the operator of the
terminal Aurora Energy Services for coal dust pollution into the surrounding
atmosphere and into Resurrection Bay.  No word from any of the green groups on
what has actually been harmed over the last quarter of a century.  This appears
to be little more than another notch in the continuous war on coal and the war
on energy production and jobs here in Alaska and elsewhere.

6.  Ares.  NASA got their latest white elephant off the pad midweek with the
first successful test launch of the Ares I.  This rocket is a modified Shuttle
solid rocket booster with a fifth segment of solid rocket fuel stacked on the
normal Shuttle stack of four.  There will be a liquid fueled second stage and a
payload on top.  NASA intends to use this vehicle to launch manned spacecraft
to the moon and places farther out.  Like the Shuttle, this is an absolute
economic disaster, one that because of its cost, will not allow enough of them
to be flown on a regular basis to do anything but get more and more expensive.
Estimated per flight cost of this white elephant is nearly a half billion
dollars.  NASA is essentially operating a single-payer manned spaceflight
program here in the US.  Nobody flies on their spacecraft unless they say so.
And because they are operating a monopoly, up until recently there is no
marketplace out there figuring
out how to launch people into space regularly, cheaply, safely, with a fleet
(or fleets) of robust, capable vehicles.  If congress wants to create a
marketplace for manned spaceflight (and given what this congress has done with
other free market entities lately, that assumption is problematic at best),
this program ought to be cancelled and contracted out to the private sector
which ought to be figuring out how to get large numbers of people into space
and make money doing so.  If congress allows NASA to bring Ares into operation,
it will set back manned spaceflight for another generation and further empower
a taxpayer funded and supported monopoly that will kill the hope of people that
would like to travel into space for decades to come.  This is a mistake and
ought to be immediately defunded.

7.  McClatchy.  Over the courts of last week the local McClatchy fishwrapper
published a series of investigative reports on Goldman – Sachs and its
connection to the financial meltdown last year.  Goldman has been a huge player
over the years and apparently has done quite well inflating various financial
bubbles and profiting from their collapse.  They are very well positioned to
profit handsomely should cap and trade become law.  Goldman has managed to stay
in the background for decades.  Now that everyone else has been destroyed or
taken over by the Fed or the Obama administration, their heads are now sticking
out above water.  I have no idea why McClatchy went after them last week, but I
do find it to be an interesting event.

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better
than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not
your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your
chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our
countrymen."
- Samuel Adams, speech at the Philadelphia
  State House, August 1, 1776.
