Too often we go to a TEA Party meeting, gather a lot of information, and never
pass it on Sharing the info is important for a host of reasons. Last week I
sent out a message about a meeting here in Arlington.
Somewhere, deep in the bowels of Texas, there is some special cicty-county type
govt that is supposed to co-ordinate things going on between the cities. At
least that's how I interpreted. The Arlington TEA Party was interested in going
when we found out that this quasi-govt agency was preparing to foist a 40-year
plan to put in biclycle lanes. They had already spent $250,000 on this project!
Now this is far away from the issues I usually tackle but a quarter of a
million got my attention. And a 40 year govt project! I never hear of such a
thing. So I decided to attend and this is what I found out. Rich Martin

SOS Arlington Streets Update #44: Citizens at Town Hall call for public vote on
bike plan
Howdy all,
The turnout at last week’s Thursday March 31st Town Hall Street/Bike Plan
meeting was tremendous. Estimated attendance was 275 with bike plan opponents
outnumbering advocates by 70% to 30%. This meeting shows what citizens can do
when they stand together!
This 2nd Town Hall was hosted by City Council members Jimmy Bennett, Gene
Patrick, and Robert Rivera, and our new County Commissioner , Andy Nguyen.
Councilman Bennett left the meeting soon after it began due to a serious injury
to his arm suffered earlier in the week. Mid-meeting, all but one of the
remaining hosts left due to other commitments. However, Councilman Robert
Rivera remained to oversee what proved to be a lively evening. It became clear
that the citizens of Arlington have strong feelings regarding the street/bike
plan. Councilman Rivera was there with us to the end, staying on even after
the meeting ended to speak further with citizens.
We want to thank the very many of you who gave up part of your evening to
oppose the on-street bike plan. We also appreciate the many speakers who came
forward with excellent arguments against the plan. There were 40 to 50
speakers, both pro and con. By this time, the arguments against the
street/bike plan are well known to anyone reading this email, so we will not
repeat them.
However, the perspective of the pro bike contingent does merit mention, and is
best summed up by the comment of one pro bike speaker who said, “If we wait
until we can afford this bike plan, we’ll never get it done, so let’s just do
it now.”
Our contrarian view is that taxpayers should never buy into something that’s
unaffordable.
Several speakers called for a public vote on the bike plan, each time to loud
applause. We agree.
We are ready to debate this issue with the opposition. The opposition is ready
to debate us. The taxpayers of Arlington clearly are demanding a say—a vote—on
this multi-million dollar, 40-years-in-the-making behemoth of a bike plan.
Councilman Rivera said he would bring the vote question up at City Council. We
thank him for agreeing to do so.
And what should we do now? Call or email (see contact info below) the Mayor
and every member of our City Council. Tell them you want a public vote on the
street/bike plan. It is our understanding that it is too late to get the plan
placed on the May 14th ballot, but we are in no hurry. A later date is
acceptable.
Sincerely,
Buddy Saunders
