I know I said “Texas Only” but it seems to me this must be happening all over
the country, If you didn’t read my earlier mistle reL bike paths, here’s a
quick catch up.

I recd a message from the local TEA Party that “bodies were needed” at a
meeting to Save our Streets (SOS). A quasi-govt agency which I never heard of
had spent 250,000 tax dollars to line the streets of Arlington with bike paths.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d ever be protesting bike paths. I
lived on a bike most of my teenage years. I drove 20 miles to O’Hare, on a 20”
Shelby , at age 7; I drove to the city limits on North Ave every Satudrday
lookng for a new toy soldier. I delivered 110 newpapers at 4AM on my trusty
bicycle 7 days a week every morning for years. By that time I had a Schwinn
Phantom. Never did I see or need a bike path.

I don’t know how much money they want to spend, but it’ll take more than 40
days and 40 nights to spend it. They have a 40-year spending plan!  Even the
Soviets only had 5 and 10 year plans.

At any rate, I went to the hearing, 2/3 of which were fellow TEA Party members.
A group in yellow TEA shirts turned out to be students from the University who
depend on their bikes much like I had lived on mine. ‘Tweren’t long and they
turned  the meeting over to the public. A mic was set up and a long line of
speakers queed up behind it, waiting for their 2 minutes. It was a long night.

Damn. it doesn/t make sense to change a 4-lane street to a 2-lane street with a
turn lane and 2 bike paths, one on each side of the road. It’s an awful
expensive concrete bike path built to handle  cars and trucks.

Well, I think you get the idea. You may want to check with City Councilman to
see if they have such a plan for your neighborhood.

I just recd the below email from the Arlington TEA Party HQ.

PS
If this can happen in Texas , it can be happening anywhere.

THE BELOW IS FOR ARLINGTON RESIDENTS

Ok folks! If you oppose these bike paths then you know we are fighting an
uphill battle. This morning I received a communication regarding how our area
folks are voting. Yes, I believe it is tentative but still feel that they will
be hard to sway. Sheri Capehart is our area rep and as of right now she is
voting for the bike path.
I am opposed to this bike path but my arguments against it do not seem to sway
many! I can not support a 30 or 40 year plan. If it ain't happening now then
what is the point - - how does it benefit us since we would be paying for it
but never use it?
It's like that joke - - what is it that a buyer never uses, a user never sees,
and a dealer never wants - - a coffin! Well folks, I ain't ready to turn over
and play dead on this!
I would rather see a workable mass transit system first! That way we can save
the roads, environment, and gas costs! Our roads are already filled to capacity
especially around the stadiums! Let's look at reducing traffic jams not adding
to them.
One fellow patriot remarked that his bike is emission free - - true - - but is
it the most efficient or effective way to get to work? Not for me! I propose we
open one of our already existing parks like Dottie Lynn to extended bike paths!
This way, if the reasoning behind this bike path is that we are all fat - -
then it could be used to create more healthy and fit folks who are interested!
Here is what an Arlington Tea Party memeber wrote yesterday ( I did not get
permission to give out this patriots name)....................

SOS Arlington Streets Update #47: Early voting info and who supports/opposes
bike lanes on Arlington streets

Howdy all,

This email contains two parts.  In the first part, we list where we believe
each member of the City Council stands on the plan to put bike lanes on our
streets, together with positions taken by the various challengers.  The second
part of this email provides complete early voting information for the upcoming
May 14th Mayoral and Council elections. Early voting is May 2nd to May 10th.

When asked, some council members say they can’t take a position so long as the
plan keeps changing (due to public opposition).  Well, here’s a question they
can easily answer:  “Do you support bike lanes on the streets of Arlington ?”
If they say “No,” then they mean none.  If they say “Yes,” they can elaborate
if they wish—bike lanes on just a few streets, on a bunch of streets, or go
with the current 400-page plan which intends over 40 years to bike-lane
virtually every commercial and residential street in Arlington.

www.sosarlingtonstreets.com Vist our web site for further information.
Citizens wishing to distribute SOS flyers may pick up as many as they need at
511 East Abram Street (across from Fuzzy’s Taco Shop).

PART 1

Where current Council members and Challengers stand on the plan to put bike
lanes on Arlington ’s streets

Because it has been difficult to get some individuals to state where they stand
on the street/bike plan, we can offer only our best guess based on the little
information we have thus far.

We believe there are, at this point, 3 incumbent votes against the plan and
possibly as many as 6 incumbent votes in favor.  To defeat the street/bike
plan, five “no” votes are needed.  Any candidate wishing to be switched from
“supports” to “opposes” or vice versa should let us know.

Our aim is to provide the most accurate information possible so that the
citizens of Arlington can make their vote count, be they for or against the
street/bike plan.

RED indicates support for bike lanes on Arlington streets
BLUE indicates opposition to bike lanes on Arlington streets
NOTE: All candidates support bike paths in parks and on other off-street
greenways.
