Why would you prefer a closed proprietary format, WMA over FLAC that is 
open source, free, and has the same technical result (lossless
compression)?

I can not see _any_ reason to prefer WMA over FLAC for songs that I rip.
I could imagine a reason to buy singles in WMA format, but I'd rather
buy them in Flac or ogg or even MP3.
