So, according to this, a scratch of only 2.6mm will cause an
uncorrectable error. I would guess that many people have CD's with

Remember that this is specific to audio CDs. Data CD's have much
stronger error correction, and will never give incorrect data back.
Lack of error reporting on audio CDs is more common than you might
think. See http://www.daefeatures.co.uk/search.php for a list of drives
which don't report C2 errors. Note that most Yamaha and Pioneer drives
in this list don't report C2 errors.
