For the consumer, free is better than restricted.  The problem with DRM
is that restrictions can always be added in the future.  We have seen
it happen already with iTunes and Tivo.  DRM is not only copy
protection, it is also a way to possibly extract revenue in the future
for allowing what was previously free.

Tonight, Microsoft could deploy a software update that removes the
ability to pause WMA files.  Pausing is now a "subscription service"
where as long as you pay the monthly fee, you can pause your music. 
Miss a payment, and that ability goes away.  Why would anyone volunteer
to put themselves at the mercy of a company who has to find new ways to
generate revenue from its customers in order to survive?
