I've been using LAME to decode M4A files to MP3. I was using a server
with Windows 2000 as an os, but recenlty I have upgraded this to a new
system which is running XP (MCE edition SP2). When I try and play an
M4a file, it just will not work. I'm using SLIMP3's and Squeezebox
(original type), and have also tried with Softsqueeze. I actually seem
to remember that Softsqueeze played m4a's without LAME, but not sure.

I installed the LAME.exe in the
..../server/bin/MSWin32-x86-multi-thread directory.

I tried installing slimserver / LAME on another machine running XP
Professional (SP2), and had the same result.

I had a look through a fair amount of LAME documentation, but don't see
anything relating to any issues or set-up specific to XP. I tried LAME
version 3.96.1 and 3.97.b1, hoping that the beta version might have a
fix, but no difference in behaviour.

I have a few thousand m4a's as I used to use iTunes a lot, and don't
really want to have to re-rip everything to MP3, and loose the stuff I
bought from tunes (I converted the m4p's with Hymn).

I'd upgrade to the newer versions of Squeezebox, but I'm running 4 of
these, so I may upgrade the one I use in the lounge, but hope to keep
the others.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Roland
