Sounds like there are deliberate uncorrectable errors placed on the
disc. It's relying on the error concealment (interpolation) algorithm
in standard audio CD players to hide them.

Some CD drives do error concealment in their firmware (eg. my Plextor
PX-712A does). Others do not, with the result that the uncorrected
errors come through as ticks. I'd suggest trying to rip it in a
different drive: ask your friends to try it out on their drives. You
might find a drive that succeeds.
