Ok, here's a response. I don't use iTunes, and I wait hours for new additions to show up on the slimserver list.
And since these new additions are in flac format, I don't use iTunes either. In other words, the situation sucks when it comes to listening to new music. It's usually excellent wrt listening to music that's already scanned and properly tagged (although some bizarre bugs arise there too on about 5% of my albums), but new music has to wait for hours. I can't understand why it has to be this way, either. If iTunes (say) can do it, you'd think slimserver could do it. I think this is what's keeping me from putting a squeezebox in my parents' home. Ok, this and kindred silly slimserver problems.
