Wide format scanners are still pretty expensive, so I use a "normal" (ie
8.5" by 11") scanner to capture my album covers. My scanner's (its a
Canon, don't remember the model number) actual scan area is 8.5" x
11.7", so I only loose about 1/2" if I do two scans, one for the left
and one for the right. (Or top and bottom, depending on which bits I
want to trim.)

The secret is don't let the scanner driver "auto adjust" for each scan.
Preview the cover for the first scan and manually set the white point
and black point. Don't touch the settings when scanning the second
half. That way the two scans will have the same color assuming your
scanner is decent.

I use Photoshop to glue the bits together. If you have a recent
version, open the two scans and do "File->Automate->PhotoMerge". If
the built in preview shows a good merge with no visible seam, just
apply it. Otherwise select the option to leave the images as seperate
layers, and do the final merge yourself. I find adding a layer mask to
the top layer and selectively painting in the mask lets me get an
invisible seam. If your scanner didn't give consist color results
apply a filter layer (Usually Level is the one to use) to one layer and
tweak it to match the other.
