Jon,

yes, I can see how that would work. The only drawback with generally
leaving "Artist" blank is if you wanted to use the same files on
another player, which could get mighty confused by the absence of an
Artist. My music library gets played at different times by slimserver,
iTunes, foobar, MusicMagicMixer ... so a common denominator is helpful.

My main frustration in the current treatment of "composer" etc is that
the browse/search facilities on these are very crude (this was one of
the main motivations to putting the enhancement requests in). For
example, you can tell slimserver to include Composer or Band in
"Artist" searches, but there is no way to distinguish between them, or
look for value X of Composer and value Y of Band.

I got so frustrated I even got a Perl book out and started to read the
code - managed to make a little progress with some of the easier parts
of my desired enhancements - but got stuck. Didn't get any help on the
Developer's page, so am still stuck.

Stil, back to what we have now - perhaps I'll go back to the Wiki and
expand some of the suggestions in there, including your approach.
