So then, ripping my CD collection...

I've started, stopped, started again, changed format, stopped again,
SCREAMED LOUDLY AND KICKED THE CAT, given up, started again and re-read
every SB3 forum thread praying for a guiding light...

I don't think I want much:

1. To be able to use iTunes as my music management tool for creating
playlists as my wife understands it. Preferably this would include
ripping because it's great at finding track info. I love my SB3 but
nothing beats iTunes for ease of use.

2. Quality is everything and I don't care about storage capacity so
it's got to be an uncompressed or lossless format.

3. It has to support tagging so that a problem with my PC doesn't leave
me with a drive full of nameless music (i.e. WAV files) because the info
was stored elsewhere.

4. Must be possible to convert to MP3 because I have a player in my car
and preferably not be an 'Apple only' format.

Am I asking the impossible?

Just in case I've missed anything, this is my understanding of the near
misses:

FLAC - Lossless, supports tagging, converts to MP3, but Duh-oh! doesn't
work with iTunes....

WAV - Uncompressed, converts to MP3, works with iTunes but doesn't
support tagging...

ALE - Lossless, supports tagging, works with iTunes but, woops, it's
and 'Apple only format' and even I own the CD and imported it using
iTunes you won't give me the option to burn it to CD as an MP3???

Is it impossible? Do I have to choose to either give up on using iTunes
or become an Apple-ite who can't play nicely with his non-Apple friends
or have his music in the car?
