OK the latest update is that this is clearly an issue with incompatibility or outdated drivers for either the mobo or DVD RW drive. When I used my now ancient DVD ROM drive (circa 3yrs old) the new system (to Apple Lossless with error correction) hammered along at anything between x33-x41 speed, so clearly there's nothing serious wrong with anything else.
