OK folks, thanks for all your help but I think I've sussed out what the
problem was. I'm using iTunes in rip my CDs to Apple Lossless and as
you may know there's a 'use error correction' option.

Mow this has always been on and it doesn't seem to cause an issue with
my old drive but with it enabled the new one slows to a crawl. It
seems as that iTunes own error correction is conflicting with the
internal correction in the drive itself.

Interestingly with the iTunes correction turned off both drives still
slow right down when extracting from less than perfect discs and do a
good job of resolving all the data without 'help' from iTunes.

I must say that this experience has made me question how much better
ripping software with error correction really is than the native
correction in the drives themselves...
