Perhaps I have been particularly unlucky or you have been very lucky.
The majority of faulty CD's are easily visible from the label side of
the CD.

question the dates, I think the range is much longer. Perhaps is isn't
only Philips & Du Pont Optical UK Ltd that have been having problems.
This URL does describe how to get your discs replaced for free if you
find a bad one. Nice to know that some manufacturers will supply
support after 20 years.
