There's TRACK ReplayGain and then there's ALBUM ReplayGain, which preserves volume differences between tracks on an album, and adjusts for the loudest point within the album as a whole. Maybe your Squeezebox is set to either Album or Smart ReplayGain. Try setting it to Track ReplayGain and see if it makes a difference.
