smst: i've realised two issues:
1. My pre-amp/processor currently only powers up the main speaker amps and the sub when I use my SB2. This could (and probably would) account for the level problems (eg. missing centre and rear speaker audio - doh!) 2. My pre-amp/processor is set to expect 16bit streams from the SB2. If the stream from the DVD in question is 24bit, then I'll be throwing away bit resolution. Not quite sure what the effect of this is - it may account for level strangeness and possibly what I called 'jitter noise' - you probably know better than I. I can't reprogram my processor easily at present, so I'll revisit this in the future.
