It's been years, but I'm still looking for a Tag editor that is not a mere shadow of what's been possible in iTunes for 5 years.
iTunes is fine for adjusting basic tags when you already have enough tag information to sort and group your songs. If you're importing a batch of music that isnt tagged at all, you're pretty much out of luck. Under Windows there are dozens of Tag Editors, of which at least one dozen are an order of magnitude better than anything available for Mac OS. Three come immediately to mind: Tag & Rename, Dr. Tag and MP3 Tag Studio (all of which I paid for while predominantly using Windows). Windows has been relegated to running my PVR for the past few years and I make my living using a Mac. If I had a newer Intel Mac I don't know if I'd even bother with this search. I'd just fire up Parallels to virtualize a Windows installation and be done with it. It's not even that the software available for the Mac isn't quite as feature rich. I mean there simply is no comparison. Like I said, most Mac tools are simply a few text fields in a small window. Even if one could overcome the less than stellar UI in some of them, they just fail so many of the basic requirements that they're unsuitable for long term use. Plus I still haven't found any way at all on the Mac of setting the TSOP, TSOA and TSOT frames (sorting tags for Performer, Album and Title) If I could afford to develop a solution myself, I would, but unfortunately I'm already tied up with other priorities.
