I have a similar script written in VBS. To transcode 17,000 tracks on a Windows XP server, P4 3.0GHz w/2GB RAM it took about four days.
The nice thing is that you may never have to run it again on the entire library unless you want to change something like the mp3 bitrate for all files. After the initial run it only needs to transcode new and modified tracks.
