I don't think there's been a ruling on this - as an indication of the generally less restrictive legal positions up here, examine the position on file sharing. Last I heard I believe it was the Supreme Court that ruled on this. They didn't say yes and they didn't say no...they said it was legally equivalent to photocopying a book. The indication was that this is not illegal in itself, but may be in the future. Filesharing is legal in Canada, sort of. They ruled that downloading is not illegal but uploading is. You can download all you want but you cannot make it available to others. This aggravates the RIAA and the MPAA to no end and the MPAA has lashed back by inventing some statistics that pirated movies overwhelmingly come from Canada (Montreal, to be exact) and that they will be discontinuing advance screenings as punishment. Later they may delay releases like they do in Europe. Of course the RIAA wannabe associations up here want to change this to make it as restrictive as possible, i.e. they want ripping strictly illegal.
