As you've discovered, Slimserver needs to "see" the paths to your files
in a playlist in the same way as it sees the files in your Music
Library.

So, if your Music Library is "\\server\Music\song.mp3" and your
playlist points to the same song as "E:/Music/song.mp3", the playlist
won't work. Slimserver also currently doesn't support relative paths
for playlists, you have to use an absolute path.

If you open your playlist files up in a text editor you will be able
easily to see if the file paths need changing to match your Music
Library setup. You can either use Find and Replace (depending on your
text editor) and resave the playlist (then do a playlist rescan), or
use a batch script to automate the process.

In terms of playlist creation, the forthcoming new version of
Slimserver (Squeezecenter 7.0 which is in beta testing right now), is
step forward. It supports drag and drop playlist creation for example.
I still don't think SC will ever be my preferred way to create
playlists - and it's not designed to be either, but it's a lot easier
than it was, and I can see myself using it to edit playlist which I
wouldn't have done before.

Personally, I mostly use MusicIP to create playlists, which can be
integrated with Slimserver (and playlists from MIP get picked up fine
on a rescan).

Creating a playlist on the same box that Slimserver is installed on may
well be a bit easier, but any program that will read your files and
create an m3u file should work, if you're prepared to tweak the file
paths manually in the way I describe above.
