Hi there
I'm a completely new user, so apologies in advance for any obvious
novice errors. I'm -not- however a novice at tagging and I thought I
understood this, but my new SB3 has puzzled me - especially with it's
handling of genres.
Previously I've used an app for cataloging all my CDs and other media
(CATraxx - highly recommended for serious cataloging) and I've applied
tags through it to my MP3s and OGGs etc. I've also occasionally used
Tag&Rename to tidy up some tagging info, and the entries made in these
two programs were always in complete agreement.
Enter the SB3! First, it had enormous difficulty handling custom genres
which began with a '('. However I ended up renaming and reassigning all
these genres and that was cleared up. I wasn't pleased but I could live
with it. Then I spotted a batch of 6 Simon & Garfunkel MP3 albums with a
genre I have never consciously used. CATraxx and T&R both agreed these
were variously Folk or Folk-Rock, but SB3 and SS displayed them as
"70's" - where on Earth did this come from?
So the question in my title is - where does SS and SB3 look in each
file to get genre information? How can two separate programs agree on
the ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags, and yet SS and SB3 throw out something
entirely different. If I have to recast all my genres to suit my newly
acquired equipment, I'll mutter complaints but I'll do it. But I'd like
to know what hurdles lie ahead and what constraints I need to bear in
mind when planning my naming schemes.
Thanks and regards from a noobie
Ken
