I totally agree with your point of view. Being working hard on the
problem, I can't give another advice than the one you gave:
"work on a complete detailed tag subset that will never move and copy
the standards tags you need with a script/tool like mp3tag"

This way, you won't have to retag you whole library if you change
either your mind or your software. Furthermore, you'll be able to
handle tags in a given way for a given software/hardware and in another
way for another software/hardware. There's no better way to go (but
there are more simple way of course)
