I know what you mean about the disturbing bit - although I kind of
enjoy looking out for particularly interesting sequences. How about:
Good Charlotte - Granados - Greenday - Grieg - Guns n' Roses - Handel
...

If I really have no idea what I want to listen to then I sometimes
browse down that list, so a split library wouldn't work for me
personally.  I use multi-valued genre tagging as my solution - throw in
a few top level genre values (perhaps just "pop", "classical", "comedy")
and then browse artists from there.
