Sounds like what they're doing is more like syncing a local copy of the iTunes database with one that exists on the PC/Server. Is that what you're doing pippin? Having just a copy of the playlist lets you reorder items in the playlist, but won't do anything for general browsing if you have to hit the server for every page update.
