Having finished ripping my CD collection I am now into recording my LPs. The front end is a very high quality analogue LP system (see sig). I use Spin-it Again software which supports the sound card's maximum resolution of 24bit / 96khz recording (which I understand is beyond the capabilities of the Receiver to decode).
dbPoweramp batch converter is then used to convert to FLAC format. I have recorded about 20 LPs using the "CD" wave file setting of 16bit/44.1khz and it is very obvious that the sound quality is not as good as the original signal from the LP setup. Obviously there are a lot of possible reasons for this, but I want to experiment with different sampling speeds and bit rates to see if they make a difference. Before I spend a lot of time experimenting with different recording settings, I would appreciate the forum's help. Point me to a FAQ if you know of one. Should I use 16bit/48khz, 24bit/44khz or or 24bit/48khz? What are the file sizes (FLAC)? How easy is it to down-sample to burn a CD for the car (using dbPoweramp)? Will a 24/48 downsampled to 16/44.1 sound as good as a recording done at 16/44.1 from the outset? I have a very good signal to the receiver so it is able to cope with high data throughput, and I can "homeplug AV" it if necessary so that should not be a limitation. If anybody says "buy a Transporter", I would in a snip if I had the cash. That is why I am still using a 20 year old hi-fi! I am thinking of keeping two versions of the music. Record the LP in 24/96 format (in case funds eventually permit a Transporter) and then downsample for the Reciever.
