When tracks have track and album replay gain tags, you can set Squeezecenter to 'equalize' the loudness difference between albums (or tracks; I only use album replay gain).
An example: most albums of the last years are mastered _much_ louder than older albums. Also classical music is almost always much less loud than other genres. So the album replay gain for a classical or old album could be +1db and that of a new album could be -8db (there are even albums that are louder; almost always affected by the 'loudness war'). When playing the first album, SC will set the volume 1db higher than the actual setting (if that does not lead to clipping), and with the second album 8 db lower. For more info: there are a lot of threads about replay gain on the forum.
