Hi - new poster here and looking for some guidance on this topic.

I have my 500 CD albums stored as flac files on my hard drive. I ripped
them using the wonderful dbpoweramp at flac compression setting 5.

I understand that all CDs (= WAV files?) have a bitrate of 1411kbps and
are 16 bit in resolution with 48khz sample rate.

However when I steam to Squeezebox duet the display on the controller
tells me the files are still 16 bit but have a VBR of considerably less
than 1411kbps of approx 900. It does n't tell me sample rate.

Why the lower bit rate??

I tried setting squeezebox to decode from flac back to Wav and this
time the controller said it was streaming flac "converted to 1411kbps
ABR"

I then tried streaming a file stored as WAV and squeezebox tells me it
is streaming at 1411kbps CBR.

What is difference between VBR, CBR and ABR in flac/wav terms and does
it even matter? I just thought flac would decode itself back to the
original 1411kbps bitrate as is ts supposedly a lossless format?

Obviously, I am not techically minded so simple answers would be
appreciated!

Cheers in advance.
