Hi leisuresuitlarry, After reading through original post and the responses I think it might be helpful if we start all the way back at the beginning, as in, what is the origin of your flac files?
Do/did they come from CDs? And if so, how were the files converted from CD to flac, i.e. ripped? The best way to get good tags onto one's flac files is properly set up the software one is using to rip CDs so that the proper file tags are created at the time of ripping. If the files are coming from another source or were originally ripped without proper file names and tags then, sorry to say, you have your work cut out for you. Mp3tag is a very useful tool but it does have a steep learning curve. I use a combination of mp3tag and a mass file renaming program, such as renamer (available for free at http://www.albert.nu/default.asp?sub=programs/default.asp?sub=renamer/main.htm), to rename the files into a format that can then be "read" by mp3tag. Here's an example of what I'm talking about: Using mp3tag one can have the program automatically assign tags based on the file name. So if your files are named "01 - Time Flies", "02 - Wasting Time", etc. where "01" is the track number and "Time Flies" is the track title, mp3tag will then, using the "filename - tag" conversion, assign the correct track number and name to all the files that conform to the proper format. In this case the "filename - tag" format string would need to be "%track% - %title%". So when I run into some untagged flac files whose file names are "01. Time Flies" rather than "01 - Time Flies", I use Renamer to mass rename the files to the "proper" format and then I use mp3tag to mass tag the files. Now you're probably saying, yeah but that only takes care of the track number and track title what about the album title and artist? Okay, what you do is highlight all the tracks and cut and paste the album title and artist (along with other tags common to all the tracks, like year and genre, into their respective fields and press the "save" button. If your files are named something like "Big Frankie - Time's A Wastin' - 01 - Time Flies" (where "Big Frankie" is the artist and "Time's A Wastin'" is the album) then you just have to set up the proper "filename - tag" format string in mp3tag to tag the files. In this example the format string would be "%artist% - %album% - %track% - %title%".
