I posted about the same thing not long ago in this forum. In Foobar2000, there's an option to define the tags that will be used to determine what is considered for album replaygain.
Go to Tools > Advanced > Tools > Replaygain Scanner, and check what has been defined for Album Grouping Pattern. By default it included a date or year tag in the pattern, which meant that for compilation albums with songs tagged with year of release, they weren't grouped as one album. I changed it to "%album artist% | %album%", and created a Playlist View Group using the same pattern. Then, when you load albums into a playlist, I group by that pattern, and can check what Foobar will do before performing "Scan Selection As Albums (by tags)".
