yes, that works b/c by setting ALBUMARTIST SC no longer thinks anything is a comp. as you found out, the only way around that is to go the extra step and explicitly make clear something is a comp via a comp tag.
wouldn't it be nice however, if you could, without changing anything tag wise, simply browse only album artists, or only artists, or both together? unfortunately, SC decides for you how it will be, depending on your tags. regarding your second issue, please try to be specific when you say "show up." i assume you mean on the SB, but you could mean in the webui, etc...
