For the past couple of years, I've been ripping to flac using my Ubuntu
laptop, which is currently on 9.04.

I have no memory of what package I was using. It just worked. I had to
nuke my install due to a hard disk failure in my laptop, and now I can't
find a ripper/encoder that I like.

The two that I've tried are "grip" and "sound juicer"
I can't make grip put the appropriate Vorbis comments for
artist/album/track in the flac output. Perhaps there is a switch I can't
find. Google has been no help.

Sound Juicer nearly works perfectly, but it numbers the tracks without a
leading 0 for single digit numbers. This works OK for CDs with 9 or
fewer tracks, but it mangles sorting for tracks with 10 or more. You see
1, 10, 11, 12, 2, 3,....
I can't see an optionfor Sound Juicer that uses a leading zero on the
track number.

I'm open to learn new options/switches, or use another package.

Hints.
