Yes, you must be correct about that. I did a quick investigation. My quick (perhaps incomplete) conclusion is that I was mistaking behavior of Custom Scan plugin for behavior of Squeezebox Server.
Nevertheless, the Custom Scan plugin can read the tag as it appears in the file. And, a user can obtain the track count from there if he so desires. You asked "what was the point". Ajs had a question that was similar to mine and I found an answer, so I shared. But your initial question seems not to be truly inquisitive but more of a vehicle for derision.
