In my experience the visible state of the CD surface has pretty much zero impact on the chances of getting a secure rip in one pass. When I recently reripped all 500 of my CDs, most of the visibly scratched ones ripped securely on the first pass and the 20-30 troublesome ones were fairly evenly split between visibly scratched ones and seemingly pristine ones.
