i wrote a bunch of posts for the BLISS apps blog which will be posted soon, but i go into this somewhat more there. the most amazing aspect of this to me, is how useless ALL the "pre-set" genre tags are, regardless of what app you rip with. the default dropdown list in EAC or winamp has about 5 sensible tags out of what looks like 100. ridiculous the crap thats there, and even moreso, what isn't. for years i basically ignored the genre tag, and used a folder hierarchy to establish basic genre keeping. this is useful b/c a good app like winamp has smartviews and you can get basically realtime dynamic updated views just by putting something in or out of a HD location. (smartviews are very powerful, and can use all kinds of multiple criteria to give you the results set you want) but for years i ignored the genre tag. i've now decided to go back and try to reconsider it as one more criteria that can be used, not just for custom views but regular browsing as well. one useful way to use the tag, is if i have SRV in my \Blues\ folder, i can add a "Rock & Roll" genre tag to it, and then a query of either/or will give me SRV in the results. i use only ONE genre frame, and i do NOT try to use multiple terms in the frame, using a separator character or something like that. this means it will work in a similar fashion with anything that supports a genre tag. (multiple frames or sep chars are not nearly universal yet) i do not believe "Soundtrack" is a genre. its a category of a type of recording, (and i do group them together on HD, but via multiple differing groupings under broad genre folder types). its not a genre in the sense that rock or blues or jazz is. those denote a style of music. what style of music is "Soundtrack?" so i don't use that. i can still listen to only soundtracks if i want, but i never do. genres to me are to fit my mood. here is what i have tried to make everything use, one of these terms. since i just started this a couple of months ago, this won't be my final list, some terms may be added or deleted. > Classic Rock > Rock & Roll > Rock > Hard Rock > Alt Rock > Southern Rock > Grunge > Psychedelic Rock > Progressive Rock > Metal > Punk > New Wave > > Industrial > Techno > Goth > > Funk > Disco > R&B > Blues > Jazz > > Rap > Reggae > > Singer Songwriter > Guitar God > Symphonic > > Adult Pop > Pop > Showtunes > Swing > Easy Listening > > Celtic > Classical > > Country > Bluegrass > Folk > > Comedy > Radio Show > Christmas > Halloween i don't have "Soul" b/c i use R&B for that and don't feel the need to break it down. (besides, in my folders i have "Motown and Soul") Adult Pop is for things like 10000 Maniacs or ABBA, but you can see where ABBA could have been Disco too... basically, you just have to pick one and go with it, and like i said i let the folder its in influence that if sensible, so it can be both Adult Pop and Disco, or whatever. -- MrSinatra www.lion-radio.org using: sb2 & sbc (my home) / sbrec & ipeng (parents' home) - sbs 7.5.2b - win xp pro sp3 ie8 - p4(ht) 3.2ghz, 2gig ram - 1tb wd usb2 raid1 - d-link dir-655 - 45k+ mp3 ::VOTE FOR 'BUG 15604' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15604)!!!:: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80908 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping
