Thanks for the info.  I think I mostly have gone through and actually
applied Replay Gain for a full set as opposed to each disc, although I
know I have exceptions.  I suppose I shouldn't worry too much as I
haven't really noticed any problems, including the case where I have
essentially track gain set for both track and album gain tags.

Thinking back to the Wall, I wonder what would really sound better
having each disc as a separate replay gain or as one for both sets
(outside of what the server actually does).  It seems like in that
case, you'd want one over both sets anyway, even if it isn't
necessarily right.  It might sound funny if there was a big enough
difference.  A concert or better a symphony type performance over two
discs might be a better test.  

Now, I'm just thinking too hard.  Ignorance really can be bliss
sometimes.
