And no author in his/her right mind would put "Saramago, Jose" on
his/her book, but lo' and behold, that's how one typically finds them
arranged/sorted in libraries and bookshops. And the same when browsing
through discs (CD or vinyl) in a bricks-and-mortar music shop, or even
on our own bookshelves (at least for many of us). And the point is,
doing it this way the artists still display naturally as "Peter Gabriel"
instead of "Gabriel, Peter". In other words, it still says "Peter
Gabriel", but you look for it under the Gs.

Obviously there is no universally "right" or "wrong" or even "preferred"
choice between "firstname lastname" and "lastname, firstname" ordering,
but what the OP is trying to do strikes me as achieving both natural
display and a more natural ordering. What seems "artificial" to me would
be sticking all the "Steves" together and all the "Johns" together and
all the "Peters" together, etc.
