You can get the 1010s (with their breakout boxes) for pretty cheap money 
on eBay - I got mine for £150 second-hand, it needs recapping but is 
otherwise pretty mint. The power regulator board usually needs a recap 
after a few years, sadly, but they've fixed that on newer ones. Still no 
XLRs, sadly, all jacks, but balanced at least. The 1010LTs are pretty 
nice all-round cards, though.

The RME stuff I consistently hear good stuff about, but it's as pricey 
as the ASI stuff as far as I can tell, though I haven't looked much into 
their PCIe/PCI card offerings, mostly their Firewire stuff.

ASI's really the way to go for anything Rivendell if you can scrap the 
cash together, but even their cheapest cards are expensive. They are 
/really/ good bits of kit, though, and worth absolutely every penny.
