Worth trying if you don't want to kill off pulseaudio entirely:

Start pavucontrol, select the [Configuration] tab, and select "Off" as
the Profile for your USB soundcard.

You should be able to see that pulseaudio relinquishes the card by doing

"sudo lsof /dev/snd/*"  before and after the previous operation.
