Odd that you had this problem. Perhaps there was a connection timeout setting in your VNC client?

On our system we are actually running a VNC client 24/7 in an unusual setup. I actually have the local machine executing a VNC client as it's only X-client on the local session for that login (a "detached" VNC client starts up automatically earlier on in boot up). I do this because I seem to get better remote VNC performance running a VNC session that is not associated with an actual X session.

This arrangement actually saved us one time when for some reason the X-server crashed (I think during a power dip that caused a glitch in the video hardware). The station manager called me up, confused, and said the main screen was black, yet the station was still on the air and he didn't know why. I simply remote SSH'ed into the system, restarted the display manager and it all came back with no interruption to the audience.

Anyway, I agree that controlling the core audio engine (CAED) remotely as described to you would normally be the best solution, but requires you to get Linux up an running on the 2nd computer, which for what you have, should be no problem. An alternative would be to use a cheap Android tablet, then your only reasonable choice would be the VNC idea (although you can also use the remote X too because I stumbled across an X server for Android a couple of years ago). The Android tablet would be cheaper and more compact solution to your problem if interested. Of course you can also use an iPad + VNC as well, or even an MS Surface running Windows depending on your sanity.

You might need to play with settings in your ~/.vnc/startup file as if you try to use the same login as your main workstation (which you might need to if you are running Jack Audio), sometimes window managers gets all confused dealing with a 2nd graphical login. I think I would simply run rdpanel alone (as in NO window manager) for a true "kiosk" like experience for that the normal login to that 2nd screen.

Hello all!

3) VNC trickery. Some months back I set up a VNC server that would immediately
present RDPanel to the client upon connection. It did work - but trying to keep
a VNC session open forever ended up being, ahem, challenging. Not a likely
choice this time around.
