If you’re trying to use utf8mb4, there are going to be a number of problems
with the Rivendell schema. You should use latin1.
However, the fact that even the basic DB connection authentication is broken in
the ‘mysql’ database tells me that there is something fundamentally foobar with
that MariaDB package.
