hi all,

just wanted to drop a quick line to let you know what we've been doing
this last week. as you might have realized our due date for beta 3 was
three days ago, and we still don't have it out. we're working hard on
it and expect it to see the light of day ASAP. we think it will be
worth the wait.

meanwhile, here's what's going on:

- we've split the rl-users list. on the front page of
http://www.redmondlinux.org/ a line of text reads "Join our mailing list
to keep up to date with Redmond Linux." that used to sign people up for
this list, rl-users. it now signs them up for a different list,
rl-announce, strictly for press releases. this list is now for
user-to-user support.

speaking of support,

- we've got new support options. we've built
http://www.redmondlinux.org/support/ to showcase our support options;
there will be three different types of support - two paid [managed
services and traditional] as well as the free user-to-user support. the
free support has been upgraded as well with the addition of a newsgroup
server. click on news://news.redmondlinux.org/alt.os.linux.redmond to
go to that newsgroup.

in the user-to-user support area we have also added a signup form for
this list, rl-users.

- software upgrades

caldera just released a beta of their latest workstation package, COL
3.1 Workstation, and this addition has kept us busy with updating our
software to match. Good things to come of this will be more GUI
configuration tools [a graphical X configuration tool, for instance!],
our proper update program, migration from LPRng to CUPS for printing,
and more.

we've already used their software to create:

- fully antialiased KDE! build 30 will include fully antialiased KDE.
this means that all the fonts you will see within KDE - on the menus and
in all of the KDE programs - will be smooth instead of choppy. this
looks *really slick*.

we've also partnered with thekompany.com to include

- a financial management program! we've bundled a demo of Kapital,
their KDE-based finance program. I spent a lot of time looking at
different programs, and Kapital beats both gnucash and Moneydance hands
down. this is already working and will be on the Beta 3 CD. for more
information visit
http://www.thekompany.com/products/kapital/

of course, we've fixed a boatload of bugs also. cool things we have
left to do before shipping Beta 3:

- massage the KDE menus a little more
- add our update program and our managed services program
- finalize the logos
- finalize the installation guide
- fix a few more bugs

linuxcare's letting me work on this full-time for the next little while,
so this should finish itself in short order.

thanks!
