Previous to my R31 I had (still have, actually) an i1500, very similar to your i1400. Also a C366, same video, it also worked great (and still does). I found a driver for the internal winmodem as well. I also had some trouble with the NIC I bought - it seems I had to update one of the PCMCIA files to add an entry for it, since it used a recognized chipset.

Hi Ed,

IBM does seem to make notebooks that Linux likes. I once put Mandrake 8.1 on
an IBM Thinkpad iSeries 1400, which is a 366C. It only has a 4.5 GB disk, 192
MB of RAM and a NeoMagic MagicGraph 256AV video card with 2.5 MB of VRAM, but
it worked pretty well. The video was kind of slow, but the screwball NeoMagic
video card was even recognized! The only trouble I had was finding a way to
get my PCMCIA NIC to work. I can't remember what I did to solve that one, but
I must have replaced it with a more widely know brand.

Although certainly not ideal with today's Linux, it still worked pretty well.
Actually, it was a pretty cool notebook in its day. 3-spindle design (which
was a deciding factor in my purchase) and great feature where you can use the
cd rom drive as a cd player with the display closed up. It has front panel
playback controls. Since I used to travel a lot, it was nice not to have to
bring a traditional portable cd player. Does anyone still make them like
that? I haven't really taken a look since I bought that one.

Best,
